Raising a Glass to Christmas

Written by

Our Christmas Menu is full of festive Bakehouse favourites and although great food is key to an excellent Christmas (and the rest of the year for that matter), let’s not forget about the all-important selection of drinks available at The Old Bakehouse, for drinkers and diners alike. In our last blog, we promised to bring…

It’s Time…Christmas is Coming to The Old Bakehouse

Written by

As the nights draw in and the days get colder, it’s time to face facts – Christmas is now only a matter of weeks away.

If you’re looking for somewhere to dine over the festive period, then look no further than The Old Bakehouse. Why not bring the family or book your office Christmas meal with us and enjoy our new Christmas menu? It’s a traditional affair with a Scottish twist, all of which can be enjoyed within the warm and cosy surroundings of The Old Bakehouse. We’ll even light the log fire for your arrival.  We also sell gift vouchers – the perfect Christmas gift!

So what can you expect from our Christmas menu? Of course, we have old favourites which are a must. This includes roast breast of free range turkey with turkey stock gravy, kilted sausage, cranberry chutney and a plethora of traditional accompaniments, plus our very own Bakehouse Christmas pudding with brandy cream.

But the menu doesn’t stop there – take a look at what else is on offer below. Remember, we pride ourselves on using locally sourced produce and our Christmas menu is no different.

To start…
Warm your bones with the Bakehouse parsnip and cumin soup or a game and red wine broth – both served with crusty bread from Forsyth’s of Peebles. We also have game rillettes accompanied with a homemade piccalilli, hot toast and butter, and home cured gravlax with a dill honey mustard dressing. For a meat-free option, choose from a mixed mushroom, leek and Gruyère tartlet or a beetroot, blue cheese and walnut salad with raspberry and chilli dressing.

For main…
Treat yourself to a Scottish feast with a chargrilled 8oz Scotch Sirloin with black pepper and Cognac sauce, seasonal vegetables and potatoes or local pheasant breast with haggis stuffing, streaky bacon, orange and thyme gravy, buttery mash and seasonal vegetables. The fish dish – pan fried fillet of seam bream with chorizo and fennel potatoes, spinach and a tomato, caper and citrus dressing – is delicious, as is the mixed vegetable, tomato and halloumi gratin with spicy sweet potato chips and a dressed salad.

For dessert…
Finish your meal in style with a selection of hearty desserts. This includes vanilla and white chocolate cheesecake with a wild berry coulis, chocolate and pecan brownie served with hot fudge sauce and caramel ice-cream, plus a traditional sticky toffee pudding accompanied with vanilla ice-cream. We also have a quality cheese board filled with a selection of ripe cheeses, house chutney and oatcakes.

It’s fair to say that there’s something for everyone on The Old Bakehouse Christmas menu and it won’t break the bank with 2 courses for £22.50 or 3 courses for £26. We’ll also have an excellent selection of drinks to accompany the food, which we’ll tell you more about very soon.

The Christmas menu is available from Wednesday 30th November right through to Christmas Eve but we advise booking as soon as possible to avoid disappointment – simply call 01968 660830 to reserve your table.

We enjoyed a fantastic summer at The Old Bakehouse but we’re looking forward to celebrating Christmas with our local and loyal customers, as well as new faces from near and far.

Have You Tried Our New Menu?

Written by

If you read our latest blog then you will know that here at The Old Bakehouse, local provenance really is key to both our food and drink offering. With this is mind, we’ve launched our new summer menu filled to the brim with local produce to create some brilliant dishes and flavours that won’t disappoint.

You’ll find twists on old favourites, a range of new Bakehouse salads and some completely new and innovative dishes. Our chefs, Gareth and Scott, have worked tirelessly to ensure that there’s something for everyone while embracing our passion for all things local. This includes dishes such as venison, port and Stilton pie, fresh Scottish mussels, Gareth’s southern fried chicken burger, sesame grilled salmon fillet, and of course, traditional battered fish and chips.

However, it’s the slow braised pork belly with black pudding mash, grain mustard and cider gravy, that’s been the big hit with our customers so far. With the pork supplied by local butchers, John Gilmour, they are just one of our many local and trusted suppliers.

What else is on the menu…

Splendid starters
Start your meal off in style with one of our delicious starters. How about haggis with a twist in the form of haggis croquettes with red onion and whiskey chutney? Or maybe a Dunlop smoked cheddar and spinach tartlet is more your thing. We even do Bakehouse nachos – perfect for sharing!

Sumptuous steaks
John Gilmour Butchers also supply our steaks – all 28 days aged Scotch beef. Choose from our 8oz Bakehouse steak burger, or one of our fillet, sirloin or ribeye cuts. Add a sauce (black pepper and cognac, gorgonzola white wine or garlic butter) and you won’t be left disappointed.

Meat-free delights
Although we are proud of our associations with local meat suppliers, we are also delighted to offer a range of dishes for those who prefer a meat-free option.  The breaded halloumi burger and Bakehouse sizzling fajitas with stir-fried vegetables both come highly recommended.

Children’s favourites
We welcome people of all ages to dine with us at The Old Bakehouse, which is why we offer a quality children’s menu with two course for £7.50 including a drink. Let the kids choose from dishes such as the Bakehouse mini burger, fish goujons, Gilmour’s pork sausages and breaded mini chicken fillets.

Sunday brunch
Our Sunday Brunch menu is the perfect excuse to spend time relaxing on a Sunday. Served from 11am-2pm, you’ll find classics such as smoked salmon benedict and eggs florentine but we also challenge you to the full Scottish or for those with smaller appetites, the smaller Scottish!

Sunday lunch
We love Sundays at The Old Bakehouse and they wouldn’t be the same without a traditional Sunday roast. Join us for a roast rump of Scottish borders beef with a rich beef gravy, Yorkshire pudding and traditional accompaniments.

Something special
Each week you will find new specials added to the menu, so there’s always something different to try. This could be anything from seafood chowder served with crusty bread from nearby Forsyth’s to start or pheasant breast from Baddinsgill, accompanied with a port veloute and chive mash.

Decedent desserts
A dessert menu not to be missed. Indulge in classics such as vanilla crème brûlée with homemade shortbread or try our own Bakehouse cheesecake. Ice-cream, courtesy of Taylor’s of Biggar, proves to be popular during the summer months but if you fancy a savoury option, then our cheese board is a must!

Drinks galore
Of course, no meal is complete without a good drink. We are always introducing new wines to our extensive list, with the recent addition of a fantastic Meiomi Pinot Noir. Our new mocktails menu is perfect for the kids, adults looking for a refreshing drink or drivers who don’t want a glass of coke!

Take a look at our new summer menu and if you’re tempted, call us on 01968 660830 to make a reservation. Be sure to let us know what you think on TripAdvisor or over on our Facebook page. We look forward to seeing you at The Old Bakehouse soon.
